southern england, area south of severn of thames river. dialect of London, ancestor of working class sociolect such as cockney in middle english
west midlands (me)
western part of england, east of welsh border. some Scandinavian settlement. sometimes shared features with southern
east midlands (me)
eatsern england south of humber estuary and north of London. significant Scandinavian population. became the basis for standard English. great economic trade center.
northern (me)
north, south of scotland. extensive scandinavian settlement. old norse influence is significant. closely related to middle scots.
what are the four main dialects of old English?
anglian (northumbrian and mercian) west saxon, kentish
what did the oe dialects change into in me?
northrumbrian-northern, mercian-midlands, west saxon became southern, kentish-kentish
standardised west saxon
does not show language change in the other dialects such as loss of inflections and borrowings from old norse.
why does old english look so different from middle english
the norman invasion interrupted the standardisation of old English. old English was standard and by middle english it was no longer standardized which makes them seem more different in comparison.
