Energy Uptake and Regulation Flashcards
What is type 1 diabetes?
A person is unable to make insulin
Why are diabetics hyperglycemic?
Because there is no hormonal signal to tell the body to store glucose and use energy to make tissues.
What are three indicators of Diabetes in a patient?
Hyperglycemia, High levels of free fatty acids, hyperketotic with ketoacidosis
Which tissue stores the most glycogen, but cannot release glucose directly into the blood stream?
Muscle
Must send glycogen to liver/kidney for glucose synthesis
The liver and kidney can synthesize glucose from what three sources?
lactate, glycerol, amino acids
Why are fatty acid chains usually even numbered?
Because they are made with acetyl - CoA
What are the essential fatty acids?
Linolenic acid, linoleic acid
How are proteins stored?
Proteins have no storage form
Nitrogen usually comes in and out of the body via what?
Proteins
What factors does basal metabolic rate depend on?
Lean body mass (adipose tissue has no contribution)
Body surface area
Age
Gender (Men slightly higher)
What is Marasmus?
Medical term for starvation
What is kwashiorkor?
Protein deficiency, but total caloric intake (energy) is okay
What organ is responsible for the release of insulin and glucagon?
Pancreas
