Example:
When a metal saucepan containing water is placed on a hot stove, the water and saucepan lid soon become hot. Heat energy of the flame or heating element is transferred from the base of the saucepan to the water and to the saucepan lid.

Conduction: heat energy is transferred through a material or between materials due to contact at the particle level
Convention: liquids or gases gain heat energy and then move from one place to another
Radiation: objects give off heat energy in the form of infra-red radiation
