energy transfer - long duration Flashcards
1
Q
why does low intensity and long duration exercise use the aerobic system
A
because the demand for oxygen can easily be met and glucose can be broken down much more efficiently when oxygen is present
2
Q
oxygen consumption
A
the amount of oxygen we use to produce ATP usually referred to as VO2
3
Q
VO2 max
A
the maximum volume of oxygen that can be taken up by the muscles per minute
4
Q
sub-maximal oxygen deficit
A
when there is not enough oxygen available at the start of exercise to provide all the energy (ATP) aerobically
5
Q
explain sub-maximal oxygen deficit
A
- at the start of exercise insufficient oxygen is distributed to the tissues for all energy to be provided aerobically.
- Because it takes time for circulatory system to respond to the increase in demand for oxygen and it also takes time for mitochondria to adjust to rate of aerobic respiration.
- Therefore energy is provided anaerobically to satisfy the increase in demand for energy until the circulatory system and mitochondria can cope = sub-maximal oxygen deficit
6
Q
maximum oxygen deficit
A
- gives an indication for anaerobic capacity
