Energy Systems Flashcards
ATP-CP Pathway
A muscle cell has some amount of ATP that can be used immediately for only 3 seconds
Must be recycled continuously within each cell
A way to supply ATP rapidly is from the breakdown of Creatine Phosphate
Glycolysis Pathway
Muscles contain a large reserve of glycogen
Breakdown of Glycogen, we get pyruvate
When no oxygen is present pyruvate is converted into lactic acid
Glycogen is broken down into glucose to make ATP and lactic acid
Lactic acid prevents the body from breaking down more glycogen once it reaches a certain level
Powerful but short-lived physical actions
The Aerobic System (uses oxygen)
oxygen is present, glucose can be completely broken down into Carbon dioxide and water in a process called aerobic respiration
efficiently & abundantly
primary energy source for endurance events
