Energy systems Flashcards
How long does ATP last for?
2 seconds
How long does it take for our phosphagen stores to recover?
3 minutes and approximately 30 seconds for 50%
where is phosphocreatine stored?
In the sarcoplasm of the muscle
How long does the ATP-PC system last for ?
10 seconds
what enzyme breaks down glycogen into glucose?
glycogen phosphorylase
What is the Oxygen deficit?
The amount of oxygen needed to return the body back to its pre-exercise state
How many liters of oxygen is required in the Alactacid phase of EPOC?
1-4 liters of oxygen
How long may core body temperatures remain elevated in the Lactacid phase of the recovery process?
Up to 7 hours
How many liters of oxygen is required in the lactacid phase of EPOC?
5-8 litres
What is the process of converting Pyruvic acid into glycogen to be stored in the muscle and liver?
Glyconeogenesis
What is the process of converting pyruvic acid into glucose?
Gluconeogenesis
What percentage of pyruvic acid is converted into CO2 and H20 through the Krebs cycle?
65%
What is the energy continuum?
The relative contribution of each energy system to overall energy production depending on the intensity and duration of an activity
What occurs during the Krebs cycle?
->Pyruvic acid combines with Coenzyme A to form Acetyl CoA
-> And Acetyl CoA combines with oxaloacetic acid to form citric acid
->Then the citric acid enters the krebs cycle
->Co2 is formed
->Oxidation leads to Hydrogen ions and electrons enter the electron transfer chain
-> 2 ATP is resynthesised
What happens during the electron transfer chain?
Hydrogen ions and electrons enter the chain and are charged with potential energy. They combine with oxygen to from water or oxygen, therefore energy is resynthesised to 34 ATP
