Energy System Flashcards
How is ATP broken down
ATP is broken down by ATPase into ADP +P+ energy. Between the 2nd and 3rd phosphate group there is a high energy bond. Only lasts 2-3 secs.
What is the fuel for glycolytic system
Fuel for glycolytic system is glycogen, found in muscles and liver.
Glycolytic system is anaerobic
Breakdown of glycogen in glycolytic system
Breakdown of glycogen is :Glycolysis, glycogen is broken down into glucose, The glucose is then broken down into pyruvic acid (releasing 2 ATP) by phosphofructokinase PFK. In the absence of 02, The pyruvic acid is broken down into lactic acid by lactate dehydrogenase.
Adv of glycolytic system
Adv of glycolytic system is it provides high intensity energy, no delay for energy as glycogen is already in the muscles.
Large glycogen stores
Negatives of glycolytic system
Glycolytic system has a short duration, max 3mins, has a fatiguing by product (lactic acid which denatures enzymes) and it has an inefficient energy yield 1glycogen, 2 ATP. Slow recovery 1-2hours.
When is glycolytic system used
Glycolytic system is used for 400m, hurdles and rugby.
Aerobic system energy release
Glycogen GPP
Glucose 6 phosphate
PFK turns glucose into pyruvic acid ( generating 2 ATP) which is added to coenzyme a to form acetyl coA.
Acetyl coA is added to oxaloacetic acid to form citric acid which enters krebs cycle.
CO2 is produced and removed, H ions are produced and they enter the ETC, where electrons are removed to generate 34ATP. Then the regeneration of oxaloacetic acid occurs, which generates 2ATP.
What are characteristics of glycolytic system
Characteristics of glycolytic system are: Anaerobic Site is sarcoplasm Controlling enzyme is PFK 2 ATP produced per molecule of glucose
Why does ATP play a major role in badminton smash
ATP plays a major role in badminton smash because
ATP breakdown releases energy quickly
ATO breakdown provides energy for explosive movements
