energy sources available. Flashcards
Compare the advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuels.
Other than it being finite and releasing carbon dioxide, name two other disadvantages of fossil fuels?
Describe the main energy sources available to us now?
Fossil fuels are a chemical store of energy and include coil, oil and natural gas. Most of the UK’s electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels but how do we use fossil fuels to make electricity?
Name a renewable energy generation method to do with water?
Tidal and hydroelectric rely on the falling of water to produce energy.
How does Fossil fuel work at the start?
Fossil fuel is burnt to boil water and turn it into steam.
The steam rises past turbines and causes them to spin.
What is a turbine?
The turbines are connected to generators which are spun to generate electricity.
What does a transformer do ?
Transformers are used to step up the voltage before feeding the electricity into the National Grid.
Can transformers step down voltage?
Transformers are used to step down the voltage before feeding electricity into homes.
two points to wards the problems of burning fossil fuels?
Increasing fuel costs
Release sulphur dioxide (SO2) when burnt – acid rain
4 points towards using renewable fuels?
Cheap to run (no fuel costs)
No polluting gases produced
Very reliable
Can be switched on when needed
Are these renewable Coal, oil, gas and nuclear, what is the definition of renewable?
NO, A non-renewable energy resource is one with afiniteamount. It will eventually run out when all reserves have been used up.
2 more points against fossil fuels
Releases CO2(causes global warming) Radioactive waste (needs to be disposed of safely)
Nuclear fission is what ?
Nuclear fissionis the splitting of a large atomic nucleus into smaller nuclei.
What are renewable energies?
Biofuel, wind, hydroelectricity, geothermal, tides, solar and water waves.
An energy from a source that is not depleted when used, such as wind or solar power.
Name 2 bad things about Growing biofuels ?
Growing biofuels can take up land that could be used for farming.
Local habitats are affected by the large areas that need to be flooded to build dams
Tidal barrages can block sewage which needs to go out to
Solar panels what are they? how do they work? and name something bad about them?
Solar panels use infrared radiation from the sun to directly heat something, i.e. running water. Where as solar cells uses light energy from the sun to generate electricity.
It costs a lot of money to make them more efficient
Unreliable as it is not always sunny
