Energy S1 Flashcards
What is a simple machine that can be used to lift heavier objects?
A lever
How do you know that a beam is balanced?
For the beam to be balanced, the value of the mass multiplied by the distance from the pivot must be the same on both sides.
Give an example of a balance equation
10g x 40cm = 20g x 20cm
30g x 30cm = 30g x 30cm
60g x 20cm = 20g x 60cm
50g x 20cm = 100g x 10cm
What is energy measured in?
Joules
What are 8 different forms of energy?
Kinetic, heat, light, sound, nuclear and the potentials gravity, gravitational, chemical and elastic..
What are some examples of non-renewable energy sources?
Coal, natural gas, oil and nuclear energy.
What are some examples of renewable energy sources?
Solar, tidal, wave, hydro,wind, biomass and geothermal
What are some pros of hydro energy?
Its renewable, you can use it anywhere near with a river, good water supply, and attracts tourist and new wildlife.
What are some cons of hydro energy?
It attracts invasive species, it destroys habitats, higher risk of flooding and expensive.
What is the energy transfer for a kettle?
Electric -> Thermal
What is the energy transfer for a light bulb?
Electric -> Light + Thermal
What is the energy transfer for a wind turbine?
Kinetic energy -> Rotational energy
What is a pulley?
A simple machine that can reduce the effort needed to lift a heavy object.
What does a Sankey diagram show?
The proportion of energy transferred.
