Energy Resources Flashcards
How does wind energy work?
- the energy in the wind , turn two or three propeller blades around a rotor
- the rotor is connected to the main shaft , which spins a generator create electricity
Advantages of wind energy
Renewable energy
No fuel costs
No harmful polluting gases produced
Disadvantages of wind energy ?
Noisy
Spoil views for people leaving near them
How does geothermal energy work ?
A geothermal plant works by tapping into steam or hot water resenvoirs underground
The heat is used to drive an electrical generator
Advantages of geothermal energy
Renewable
Clean energy
Do not produce green house gases
Disadvantages of geothermal energy
Green house gas below earthed surface can potentially migrate to the surface and into the atmosphere
Construction of geothermal power plants can affect the stability of land
How does solar energy work ?
Sunlight hits a solar panel on the roof
The panels convert the energy to DC current , which flows to an inverter
The inverter converts the electricity , from DC to AC. , which you can use to power your home
Advantages of solar energy?
Pollution free
No green house gases
Renewable
Reduced dependence on foreign oil and fossil feuls
Disadvantages of solar energy
Weather dependent
Expensive
Uses a lot of space
How does tidal energy work ?
The turbine and generator converts
the movement of water coming from change in tide.
The kinetic energy into electricity
Advantages of tidal energy
Store a larger amount of energy than wind
Renewable
Never run out
Environmentally friendly
Disadvantages of tidal energy
Huge demand
How does hydroelectric energy work ?
Hydro power pants capture the energy of falling water to generate electricity
A turbine converts the kinetic is falling water into mechanical energy
Then a generator converts the mechanical energy from the turbine into electric energy
Advantages of hydroelectric energy ?
Clean feul source
Disadvantages of hydroelectric energy ?
Expensive
Droughts
