Energy resources Flashcards
name 3 fossil fuels
coal, oil and gas
what green house gas is produced when fossil fuels burn?
carbon dioxide
name some renewable resources
wind, tidal, waves, biomass, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal
what is a non-renewable resource?
a resource that will run out
what is a renewable resource?
a resource that will not run out
how is electricity generated from coal?
a fuel burns to heat water and produce steam. The steam drives a turbine, which is like a big fan. The turbine drives a generator. This provides the push that means a current flows in an electrical device in your home. For example: a kettle. The current transfers energy from the chemical store of the fuel to the thermal store of the water in the kettle.
what are the advantages of using renewable and non-renewable energy?
using renewable energy does not produce much carbon dioxide when they produce a current or when they are built and are better for the environment. However, non-renewable resources are cheaper, easy to use and provide huge profits generated in the production of coal, oil and gas.
what are the disadvantages of using renewable and non-renewable energy?
using renewable energy is more expensive, harder to install and isn’t entirely reliable or efficient. Non-renewable energy is bad for the environment as it produces carbon dioxide, a green house gas that traps heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, so it is a huge contributor to climate change.
