Energy Pyramid Flashcards
niche
the role of an organism in the ecosystem
- if 2 species try to occupy same niche, competition shows
prey
organism thats hunted
predator
organism that actively hunts
-predators decrease size of prey population
symbolic relationships
occur when 2 or more species live closely together
commensalism, mutualism, parasitism
commensalism
relationship in which one organism benefits while the other isn’t affected
Habitat
the specific environment in which an organism lives
mutualism
The relationship in which both species benefit
Parasitism
The relationship in which one species benefits (parasites) and one species is harmed (host)
Energy pyramid
- represent different trophic levels (nourishment levels)
- each time energy is transferred, less energy is available to the next trophic level
- since so much energy is lost at each trophic level, fewer organisms are found at the higher trophic levels
producers have
The greatest number of organisms
order of organisms (tertiary, primary…)
tertiary consumers (1KCal) -> secondary consumers (10kcal) -> primary consumers (100 K CAL) -> producers (1000 K CAL)
