Cells Quiz Flashcards
Nuclear membrane
Separates the nucleus from the rest of the cell, contains pours (openings)
Nucleus
The control center of the cell, contains DNA. Site of replication., Surrounded by a nuclear envelope
Nucleolus
Dance center of the nucleus, involved in production of ribosomes, in control of making ribosomes
Cell membrane
Plasma membrane
Separates the cell from the environment, controls movement of molecules in/out of cell (selectively permeable), made of a phospholipid bilayer embedded with proteins equals fat sandwich, hydrophilic- water loving, hydrophobic water fearing, embedded with receptor molecules that play roll in Communication, signaling molecules must be matched shape of receptor site of target cell
Cytoplasm
Liquid portion of cell, organelles are suspended in it.
Mitochondria
“Powerhouse” of cell, site of respiration, releases ATP (energy), most numerous in the muscle cells
Ribosome
Make proteins Essential to cell growth and repair
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Transport system, embedded with ribosomes
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Transport system liking ribosomes, detoxifies the cell
Golgi apparatus
Prepare is in packages materials for transport
Lysosome
Maintains homeostasis by digesting large molecules (foreign particles, damaged organelles, etc.)
Vacuole (storage)
Stores water, food, waste (like food court in airport), Plant cells have one large central vacuole and animal cells have multiple small vacuoles
Centriole
Found in animal cells only, aids in cell division
Chloroplast
Found in plant cells only, site of photosynthesis (convert sunlight into chemical energy, glucose)
Cell wall
Found in plant cells only, tough, rigid, converting that gives cells cheap, made mostly of cellulose
