Energy movement through an ecosystem 1 Flashcards
Where does energy usually come from for an ecosystem?
The sun
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is formed by the interactions between all living and non-living things.
What does Biotic mean?
All living things/cactus, tree, spider
What does Abiotic mean?
Non-living things/ Land, water, air, and sunlight
What are producers? Where do they get their energy from? What are they also called?
Organisms that can make their own food through photosynthesis, and the sun, and autotrophs (self-nourishment).
What are consumers? Where do they get their energy from? What are they also called?
Organisms that can’t make their own food. Eat other organisms and called Heterotrophs (other nourishment).
What are Herbivores?
Organisms that can only eat plants.
What are Carnivores?
Organisms that only eat meat.
What are Omnivores?
Organisms that can eat both plants and animals.
What are Detritivores?
Organisms that eat dead plants and animal remains.
What are decomposers?
Organisms that break down/recycle dead or decaying organisms.
What does FBI mean?
Fungi, bacteria, and Insects
What is biomass?
The total mass of organisms in an area.
What is phytoplankton?
Tiny floating algae.
What is an energy pyramid?
An energy pyramid is a pyramid that shows the representation of showing the flow of energy at each trophic level in an ecosystem.
