Energy In The Future Flashcards
What does exploit mean?
To take advantage of
What is predicted to happen to energy consumption by 2050?
By 2050, energy demand could be three times the current rate
How might a country increase energy supply?
A country might:
• try to exploit its own resources (if it has them)
• make agreements with other countries to buy supply from them
• stop using as much energy
How have countries like China tried to use renewable energy for the future?
They’ve purposefully flooded areas to generate hydroelectric power. The ‘Three Gorges project’ in China meant hundreds of people had to leave their homes
What have supermarkets had to do because of energy demand?
They’ve had to increase their food prices. This is bad because people wouldn’t want to buy food that’s expensive so they’d switch to a different supermarket meaning they’d lose customers. Another option would be to decrease staff
What would happen to the environments because of energy insecurity?
It could lead to countries chopping down lots of trees for wood and drilling the land for oil and gas in areas which are at great risk of damage. This means that animals and plant species could become extinct due to their habitats becoming endangered and ruined
What might companies have to do to save money?
They might cut down jobs so they can save more money to pay for their energy
What are countries doing to beautiful countryside areas?
They’re building wind turbines because of the desperate need for renewable energy
