Energy From Respiration Flashcards
Where does Aerobic respiration take place?
Mitochondria
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose+oxygen➡️carbon dioxide+water(+energy)
When do plants use the carbon dioxide released in aerobic respiration?
In Photosynthesis
In aerobic respiration, what is the energy released used for?
- Build large molecules from small ones.
- Enable muscle contraction
- Maintain constant body temp in colder surroundings
- Build sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids and then proteins in plants
What do the muscles need during exercise?
More energy
What needs to be transported to the muscles during exercise?
Glucose and oxygen
What two things need to be done when the body is exercising?
- Increase rate of oxygen and glucose reaching the muscle cells
- Remove extra waste carbon dioxide produced more quickly
How are the oxygen and glucose in the blood transported to the muscles?
- Heart rate increases
- Greater rate and depth of breathing
- Greater release of Carbon dioxide at the lungs
- Blood vessels supplying muscles dilate
What does the increase in heart rate and dilation of the mucks cells allow?
Allows more blood, so glucose and oxygen, to reach the muscles
What did muscles store and what is it converted to during exercise?
Muscles store glycogen which is converted to glucose during exercise.
What happens when muscles are exercised for a long period of time?
The muscles have too little oxygen and stop contracting efficiently
When do muscles use anaerobic respiration?
When aerobic respiration cannot provide enough oxygen for the muscles
What is produced when glucose is not completely broken down in anaerobic respiration?
Lactic acid
How is lactic acid removed?
- By blood flowing through the muscles
* Breathing and warming down Ali’s breaks down lactic acid
Aerobic respiration releases energy when oxygen is…
