Energy Flow In An Ecosystem Flashcards
Producer
The first trophic level in a food chain.
Autotroph
Autotrophs make their own food- photosynthetic organisms
Heterotroph
A consumer- organisms which feed on other living organisms.
Carnivores- meat eaters
Omnivores- meat and plant eaters
Herbivores- plant eaters
Decomposer/Detrivore
They feed on dead, decaying matter or excretions- (returns nutrients back to the Earth)
Food Chain
The representation of energy flow from a producer to sequential consumers.
Trophic Level
The levels within a food chain.
Food Web
Illustrates interconnections between various food chains.
Energy Pyramid
Used to display the total amount of incoming energy at each successive level.
Why does energy decrease as it travels through a food chain? (Three reasons)
1- Not everything on the lower level is eaten. Ex- roots
2-Not everything eaten is digested. Ex- bones, feathers, fur
3-Not all energy which enters in the trophic level is stored, some of it is used by the organism. Ex- heat production, movement
How much energy is lost from one trophic level to the next?
There is a loss of 10% energy from one trophic level to the next.
