Biotic Versus Abiotic And Biodiversity Flashcards
Biotic- Definition and Example
Living things in an ecosystem:
Ex- Animals, plants, disease, predation, competition
Abiotic- Definition and Example
Non-living things in an ecosystem:
Ex-Air, water, rocks, land formations, ozone layer, light, heat, soil
What happens if a biotic factor dies?
It is still considered to be biotic, however we define it as “biotic-dead.”
Ecology
The study of how organisms interact with one another and with their environment
- A variety of abiotic and biotic factors affect these interactions
Biodiversity
The number and variety of species in an ecosystem
Diverse- Rainforest
Not Diverse- Desert
Sustainability
Sustainability means to try and keep something running for as long as possible.
What are the three key elements an ecosystem needs in order to be sustainable? What does each element mean?
Diversity- Number of different species.
Productivity- Is the growth rate of how fast things take to reproduce or grow.
Resilience- The ability to come back after a disturbance.
Why is diversity important?
Ecosystems that are biologically diverse are more sustainable because if one element becomes extinct, there are other elements to rely on.
