Energy Final Flashcards
What is a system? Why is it important?
Everything talked about and everything that it touches
What is the difference between thermal energy, kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy?
thermal is friction, kinetic is motion, gravitational is height, and elastic is a spring of some kind.
How do we interpret an energy pie chart?
we see an energy transfer, a lot of times from kinetic to gravitational.
How do we calculate power?
Power= work/time
What is the unit for work and energy?
the unit for work is a joule or J and the label for energy is E.
What is the unit for power?
Joule
How do we calculate gravitational potential or kinetic energy?
Eg = mass • g • height
Eg=mgh
What do all the variables in the energy equations mean?
E=1/2mv^2 is a common one (E=energy, m=mass, v=velocity)
What is the law of conservation of energy and what does it mean?
Energy is not created or destroyed, but can be changed to different forms to be used to do work.
So we can take chemical energy stored in fuel and convert it in to mechanical energy to drive a piston in our engine which will get us from one place to another, often giving off lots of thermal energy in the process.
How do you do roller coaster problems?
label the graph and then figure ot the equations.
What is the difference between energy transfer and energy transformation?
Energy Transformation is any process of transforming one form of energy to another.
Energy Transfer is the process of transfering energy from one body to another.
