Energy Concepts Flashcards
What is the definition of work?
Work is the energy transferred to a body as a result of a force and is the product of the force magnitude and the distance moved in the force’s direction.
What is the equation for work done?
W = Fx, where:
• F = force (N)
• x = distance moved in the direction of the force (m)
• W = work done (J)
How do you calculate work done when force is applied at an angle?
W = Fxcosθ
What is the equation for kinetic energy?
E_k = 0.5 * mv^2
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy an object possesses due to its position in a gravitational field.
How do you calculate the change in gravitational potential energy?
ΔE = mgΔh
What is elastic potential energy?
The energy stored in an object when it is deformed by forces, such as in a compressed spring or stretched rubber band.
What is the equation for elastic potential energy?
E = 0.5 * kx^2
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one form to another.
What equation links work done and kinetic energy when no friction is present?
Fx = (0.5 * mv^2) - (0.5 * mu^2)
What is power in physics?
Power is the rate of energy transfer and is measured in watts (W), where 1 W = 1 J/s.
What is the equation for power?
P = W / t = ΔE / t
How do you calculate efficiency?
Efficiency (%) = (useful energy output / total energy input) * 100
