ENERGY CONCEPTS Flashcards
What is work done?
work done = force x distance moved in the direction of the force
What type of energy is transferred to an object when it is moved?
Work done
What are the most common types of energy transferred as work done?
Heat and sound
What type of objects have kinetic energy?
Objects that are moving
What is the equation to calculate kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy = 1/2 x mass x velocity² (KE=1/2mv²)
What unit is used for kinetic energy?
J (Joules)
What type of objects have gravitational potential energy?
Objects that are above the ground
What is the equation to calculate gravitational potential energy?
Potential energy = mass x gravitational field strength x height (PE=mgh)
What unit is used for potential energy?
J (Joules)
Describe the energy transfers in a bouncing ball
Max PE, as it falls PE decreases and KE increases, Max KE at floor and Min PE, as it rises PE increases KE decreases
Why does a bouncy ball not bounce back to the original height?
Energy is transferred as work done against friction (heat and sound)
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one form to another
What is the equation to calculate elastic energy?
Elastic Energy = 1/2 Fx or = 1/2 kx²
What is the definition of energy?
The amount of work an object can do
What is the definition for power?
Work done per second or energy transferred per second (P=E/t)
