DYNAMICS Flashcards
What is inertia?
How hard it is to change the motion of an object
What is Newton’s 1st law?
A body will remain at rest, or continue to move with a constant velocity if forces are balanced
What does Newton’s 1st law tell us about objects moving at a constant velocity?
Resultant force = zero (balanced forces)
What is a resultant force?
Overall force acting on an object
What is Newton’s 2nd law?
Rate of change of momentum is proportional to resultant force ΣF=Δp/t (ΣF=ma)
What is Newton’s 3rd law?
If object A exerts a force on object B, then object B exerts an equal and opposite force on object A
If a bat pushes a ball forwards with 400N what does the ball do?
Ball pushes the bat backwards with 400N
Describe how Newton’s 3rd law applies to a rocket?
Exhaust fumes exert a force down on ground, ground exerts an equal and opposite force up on the rocket
What is the definition of mass?
How much matter (stuff) is in an object
What is the definition of weight?
Force due to gravity on an object
What is the equation that links weight and mass?
Weight = mass x gravitational field strength (W=mg)
What is the equation to calculate momentum?
Momentum = mass x velocity (p=mv)
What unit is used for momentum?
kgms⁻¹ or Ns
What is the law of conservation of momentum?
Total momentum before interaction = total momentum after interaction if there are no external forces acting
What equation links force and momentum?
Force = change in momentum / time (F=Δp /t)
