Energy Competency Flashcards
Why is there no such thing as cold?
Hint: use the kinetic molecular theory
The energy particles that is produced in heat never stops moving, they just slow down.
(Slower the energy, lower the heat.)
Explain how heat flows.
Heat flows from object to object, from a hotter to cooler object while exchanging thermal energy until it has reached thermal equilibrium.
What is the difference between heat and temperature?
Temperature measures how fast the energy particles are moving.
Heat is the motion of the molecules.
Remember: THEY ARE NOT THE SAME
What is the kinetic molecular theory?
Particles are always moving. The higher the energy, the faster they move.
What is chemical?
When a subatomic particle undergoes a reaction.
What is electromagnetic?
Energy moving through space
What is mechanical?
A solid turns into a liquid?
What is nuclear energy?
Energy that is stored in the nucleus
What is heat energy?
Transfers energy particles by bumping into each other
What is thermal equilibrium?
Heat flows until everything is the same temperature
Define the use of Kelvin scale.
Kelvin scales are temperature scales that have an absolute zero (where temperatures don’t exist) and atoms don’t move at all.
