Comptency 1 Part 2 Flashcards
When an alpha particle leaves the nucleus is the element still the same ?
No element is not the same because it looses a proton and protons determine what an element is.
What is an alpha particle made of ?
Two protons and two neutrons and it has a mass of 4
What is transmutation?
The changing of an element by an alpha decay
What is alpha decay?
Alpha decay is when a radiation particle is released from an atom
- breaking apart on their own
What is fusion?
Fusion is the process of combing two light atoms to form a heavier one
*combining together
What does fusion release?
Fusion releases energy that we can use for electricity
What keeps the structure of atoms together?
The electric force between negative charge and positive charge of an electron and proton
What is a chemical reaction?
A chemical reaction is combining two different elements together to form a new element.
What is fission ?
Fission is when a neutron hits an atom causing it to split apart into two, releasing energy and three neutrons that go on and repeat the process.
Process of splitting a heavy atom into a lighter atom.
* splitting apart
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are the same electrons with different mass (different number of neutrons) and same number of protons.
Radioactive decay
When an unstable atom breaks a piece of itself to make it stable
What are the elements that are essential for life?
Hydrogen, Iron, Oxygen, Potassium, Zinc
What is radioactive decay?
When an unstable atom breaks a piece of itself.
One parent nucleus breaking apart
Decay
A neutron splits a large atom making neutrons.
