Energy (Chapter 13) Flashcards
Energy
The ability to do work or cause change
Power
The rate at which energy is transferred
The amount of energy transferred in a unit of time
Kinetic Energy
The energy an object has due to its motion
Potential Energy
Stored energy that results from the position or shape of an object
This type of energy has the potential to do work
Gravitational Potential Energy
Potential energy related to an object’s height
= Weight x Height
Elastic Potential Energy
The potential energy associated with objects that can be stretched or compressed
Mechanical Energy
The form of energy associated with the position and motion of an object
= Potential energy + Kinetic energy
Thermal Energy
The total potential and kinetic energy in the particles of an object
Electrical Energy
The energy of electrical charges
Chemical Energy
Potential energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together
Nuclear Energy
A type of potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
Electromagnetic Energy
A form of energy that travels through space in waves
Energy Transformations
A change in energy from one form to another
Law of conservation of energy
When on form of energy is transformed to another, no energy is destroyed or created in the process
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
