Chapter 14 Thermal Energy Flashcards
Temperature
A measure of the kinetic energy of the individual particles in matter
Fahrenheit Scale
Most common temperature scale in US
Freezing point of water is 32F and the boiling point of water is 212F
Celsius Scale
SI unit for temperature
Freezing of water is 0C and the boiling point of water is 100C
Kelvin Scale
Temperature scale most commonly used in physical science
Freezing point of water 273K and the boiling of water is 373K
Absolute Zero
The temperature when there is no more thermal energy
0K or -273C
Heat
Thermal energy that is transferred from matter at a higher temperature to matter at a lower temperature
Conduction
Heat is transferred from one particle to another without the movement of matter
Convection
Heat is transferred by the movement of currents within a fluid
Convection Current
The circular motion created by the transfer of heat through convection
Radiation
The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
Conductor
A material that conducts heat well
Insulator
A material that does not conduct heat well
Changes of State
The physical change from one state of matter to another
Melting
The change of state from a solid to a liquid
Freezing
The change of state from a liquid to a state
