Energy Changes Flashcards
Exothermic Reaction
Release energy into it’s surroundings usually in the form of heat
(Products will be lower than reactants)
How could you measure the amount of heat energy released in an Exothermic reaction?
By putting it in a sealed container
Common types of Exothermic reactions?
-Combustion reactions= in which fuels are burnt in the presence of oxygen
-Neutralisation reactions= between acid and bases
-Most oxidation reactions=
Endothermic Reactions
-Take in heat energy from surroundings
(You’d have to supply heat for reaction to take place)
(Reactants are lower than products as products have more energy)
What would we call the difference between the energy of reactants to products in an endothermic reaction?
‘Energy absorbed’
What would we call the difference in energy between reactions and products in an Exothermic reaction?
‘Energy released’
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy needed for the reactant particle to collide and react
The greater the activation energy…
…the more energy required to start the reaction
