Energy Changes Flashcards
Exothermic reaction
A reaction in which heat is released to the surrounding.
Endothermic reaction
A reaction in which heat is absorbed from the surroundings.
Enthalpy Change of Reaction, [Change] H
The amount of energy involved in a chemical reaction is known as the enthalpy change of the reaction.
It represents the difference in energy content of the reactants and products.
Bond energy
The average amount of heat absorbed to break one mole of that particular X-Y bond in a particular compound in the gaseous state.
In order for a reaction to take place,
The particles must be correctly oriented,
The collision must occur with a minimum amount of energy
Activation Energy, Ea
The minimum energy that is needed by the reactant particles in order for a chemical reaction to occur.
