Alkane Flashcards
Alkane
Homologous series of hydrocarbons that contains only carbon- carbon single covalent bonds. They do not have a functional group.
Incomplete combustion
Flame produced becomes more smokier and sootier
Chemical properties of alkanes
Generally unreactive. Consist of only carbon- carbon single bonds and carbon- hydrogen bonds which are strong and difficult to break.
Combustion of alkanes
Burns readily in excess oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water vapour. It is highly exothermic and makes alkanes good fuel.
Substitution reactions of alkanes
Reagent: Cl (g) or Br (g)
Condition: ultraviolet light
Alkane reacts with halogens in the presence of ultraviolet light.
Use of alkanes
Fuel for heating
Fuel for cooking
Making paraffin wax for candles
Road surfacing
