Energy Changes Flashcards
What is an exothermic reaction?
One which transfers energy to the surrounding usually by heating. Show by a rise in temperature.
What is a good example of an exothermic reaction?
Burning fuels - also called combustion
Examples of Items that use exothermic reactions:
- Hand warmers use the exothermic oxidation to release energy
- Self heating cans
What is an endothermic reaction?
Takes in energy from the surroundings. Shown by a fall in temperature.
Are endothermic reactions…
A. More common than exo
B. Less common than exo
B. Less common than exothermic
Example of an endothermic reaction:
Used in some sport injury packs and the chemical reaction allows the pack to become instantly cooler without having to put it in the freezer
When old bonds break, what do the form?
New bonds
A chemical reaction in a cell produce what?
Electricity
What is a fuel cell?
Electrical cell supplied with a fuel and oxygen and uses energy from the reaction between them to provide electrical energy efficiently.
