Chemical Changes Flashcards
What is the pH scale?
The measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is
What happens if the pH of a solution is low or lower?
The more acidic it is
What happens if the pH of a solution is higher?
The more alkaline it is
How do acids and bases neutralise each other?
- Acid is a substance that forms an aqueous solution with a pH less than 7
- Acids form H+ ions in water
- A base is any substance that will react with an acid to form a salt
- An alkali is a base that dissolves in water to form a solution with a pH greater than 7z
- Alkalis form OH- ions in water
What is a Reaction between acids and bases called?
Neutralisation
What is the reactivity series?
Lists of metals in order of their reactivity towards other substances
How is the reactivity for metals determined?
By how easily they lose elections to forming positive ions. The higher up a metal is, the more easily it will form positive ions
What happens when metals react with water or acid?
They lose electrons and form positive ions.
Is the reactivity series….
A. least to most reactive
B. most to least reactive
B. Most to least reactive
What does a redox reaction mean?
When electrons are transferred.
What does OIL RIG stand for?
O xidation I s L oss R eduction I s G ain
