Energy and Sound Flashcards
Name three types of musical instruments and how they produce sound.
Percussion: by hitting, shaking or scraping
String: by plucking or rubbing the strings
Wind: by blowing air through it
How do vibrations make music? Give an example
An input of energy like blowing , hitting, or plucking starts the vibrations. The vibrations are very small fast movements. The vibrations move out from the instruments as sound energy. the sounds energy moves through the air to our ear and we hear music.
Example: drum, guitar strings, voice etc
True or False:
Sound is a form of energy
True
`True or false:
If there is no input of energy, a musical instrument will produce sound on it’s own
False
True or False:
All sounds are vibrations
True
Describe the process of how sound gets to your ear?
- Sound waves travel through the air
- Your outer ear catches the sound and sends it down your ear canal
- The sound waves make your eardrum vibrate
- The vibrations travel through your middle ear and into your inner ear
- The vibrations hit a nerve which then takes a message about the sound to your brain.
- When your brain hears the message, it hears the sound.
Which happens first?
- the sound waves reach the inner ear
- the sound waves vibrate the ear drum
the sound waves vibrate the ear drum
give an example of how you would feel a vibration.
Standing next to a railway track
Hand placed directly on a speaker or subwoofer
Complete the sentence:
Our ______ hear the vibrations as ________
ears; sound
Complete the sentence:
We can ______ vibrations with our bodies
feel
_________is a measure of how high or low a sound is
pitch
More input of energy makes a sound louder. We say that increases the ______
volume
What is noise pollution?
noise pollution is an unwanted sound that carries on for a long time
Give an example of noise pollution
humans, tools, machines, cars
If you are hearing impaired, you…
have hearing loss
How do hearing aids help the hearing impaired?
They help by making the sounds louder
Sound always moves______ from the object that is vibrating
outwards or away in all directions
True or false:
Working in a noisy environment over a long period of time will not affect your hearing.
False
True or false: When humans are underwater they cannot hear the noises that sea creatures make because sound doesn’t travel through water
False
Why do you hear sounds more softly is you cover your ears with your hands?
Because the sound has to pass through another material (hand) to get into the outer ear
Which of these are correct?
A .Our bodies use energy for only some of the things we do.
B. Our bodies use energy for everything we do.
B: Our bodies use energy for everything we do
The ear is made up of three part: Outer ear , middle ear and inner ear. The middle ear consists of 3 tiny bones. What are these?
The hammer, anvil and stirrup
When sound waves are gathered and go into your ear canal, they strike the eardrum. What happens next?
The ear drum vibrates and shakes the hammer. The hammer shakes the anvil and then the anvil shakes the stirrup which the passes the vibrations to the cochlea which will eventually pass the sound to the nerve and up to your brain.
What is in inside the cochlea?
There is liquid in the cochlea and hair like nerve ends
When we talk about sound waves…
A. A low sound makes what kind of waves?
B. A high sound makes what kind of waves?
A. shorter
B. Longer
