Energy and Electricity Flashcards
To study energy and electricity
What is the unit of measurement for current
Amperes or Amps (A)
What is the unit of measurement for voltage
Volts (V)
What is the unit of measurement for resistance
Ohms or (Ω)
What is a parallel circuit
A circuit where the current has multiple choice for routes
What is a series circuit
A circuit where the current has only one choice for route
In a parallel circuit, what happens to the rest of the bulbs when 1 bulb ‘blows.’ State why
The other bulbs remain unaffected because the circuit stays closed since the current has multiple routes as long as the source of energy remains on.
In a series circuit, what happens to the rest of the bulbs when 1 bulb ‘blows.’ State why
The other bulbs turn off because the current could only travel around the circuit one way.
What is an energy transfer
Energy that has moved from one place to another
What in an energy transformation
Energy that hase changed from one form to another
Energy input =
Energy output
What is the unit of measurement for energy
jules (j)
What is wasted energy
Wasted energy is spread out into its surroundings
What are the two main forms of energy? Give a definition of both.
Kinetic - energy in movement and Potential - stored enrgy
What is energy
The ability to do work
What is energy efficiency?
Energy effieciency is how much useful energy is used in the product
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be transferred from one place to another or transformed from one form to another.
What is the function of a wire in a circuit?
To pass current easily from one part of the circuit to another
What is the function of a cell in a circuit?
The cell supplies electrical energy.
What is the difference between a cell and a battery?
A cell is singular, but a battery is strictly two or more cells.
What is a lamp in a circuit
A lamp converts electrical energy to light.
What is an on/off switch in a circuit
An n/off switch allows current to flow only when it is in the closed (on) position.
What is a resistor in a circuit.
The resistor restricts the flow of current through a circuit
What is a variable resistor in a circuit
A variable resistor is usually used to control the current. e.g: adjusting the brightness of a lamp.
What is current
The rate at which the electrons are moving
What is voltage
The amount of energy ‘pushed’ out from the battery
What is resistance
What opposes the flow of electrons in a circuit
What happens to the current when the voltage decreases? Name what type of relationship this is.
The current decreases. This is a direct proportional relationship
What happens to the current when the resistance increases? Name the type of relationship.
The current will decrease. This is a inversely proportional relationship
What is Ohm’s Law?
Voltage is equal to the current multiplied by the resistance. (V =IR)
