Energy Flashcards
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy stored in an object due to its position above the Earth’s surface.
What is the equation for gravitational potential energy?
Ep = mass X gravitational field strength X height
What is the gravitational field strength on Earth?
9.8
What things can a house have to make it more energy efficient?
Cavity wall insulation, double glazing, loft insulation, carpets, curtains, draught excluders, jacket around hot water tank.
What is wasted energy?
Any energy that comes out of a situation that we didn’t intend to be there.
What happens to wasted energy?
It dissipates into the surroundings (it spreads out so much that it can’t be collected but it’s still there).
What is the equation for kinetic energy?
½ X mass X velocity²
What is the equation for elastic potential energy?
½ X spring constant X extension²
Change in thermal energy = ?
Change in thermal energy = mass X specific heat capacity X change in temperature
What are all the forms of energy?
Gravitational potential, electrical, elastic potential, kinetic, sound, light, nuclear, chemical, heat (thermal)
Power = ?
Power = energy ÷ time
Efficiency = ?
Efficiency = useful energy out ÷ total energy in (×100)
Change in thermal energy = ?
Change in thermal energy = mass X specific heat capacity X change in temperature
Power = ?
Power = work done ÷ time
What is power?
The rate at which energy is transferred or the rate at which work is done.
