Energy Flashcards
What is energy necessary for?
To produce heat or motion
What is energy measured in?
Joules
What are the different forms of energy?
Chemical energy Mechanical energy Thermal energy Radiant energy (Electrical energy)
What is chemical energy?
A form of energy found in the bonds that keep atoms of a molecule together
What is mechanical energy?
A form of energy related to movement
What is thermal energy?
A form of energy caused by the motion of the particles in matter (heat and cold)
What is radiant energy?
A form of energy contained in light and other electromagnetic waves
Energy can either be ______ or ______.
Transformed
Transferred
What happens when energy is transferred?
A small amount of energy is lost and released into the environment in the form of thermal energy
Why do we need to eat?
To get nutrients and energy from foods
How do nutrients provide energy to our body?
They are oxidized
What is cellular respiration?
We breathe in oxygen, which is used to oxidize the nutrients from our food (burn calories in our food). The reaction produces CO2 (waste product we exhale), H20 and energy (used by the body).
What does cellular respiration allow?
It allows the chemical energy stored in the bonds between the atoms and molecule to be released
