A long muscular tube
How is the small intestine positioned in the body?
It is folded several times
What lines the small intestine?
Villi
What do villi do?
Increase surface area through which nutrients can be absorbed into the bloodstream
What do the intestinal glands secrete?
Intestinal juices
What do intestinal juices do?
transform proteins into amino acids and fats into smaller particles like glycerol
What does the liver secrete?
Bile
Where is bile stored?
The gall bladder
What does bile do?
It emulsifies fat (separates from water)
What does the pancreas secrete?
Pancreatic juices
What do pancreatic juices do?
Break down carbohydrates into glucose
What does the small intestine do?
Churns and moves along food through peristalsis
