Where does energy come from?
- Energy comes primarily from carbs and fats and a small amount of protein.
- Glycogen is a simple sugar that is used for energy from the liver and muscles.
What is the Diet management?
- Adequate nutrition during days before competition
- Ensure proper stores of energy immediately before the event ( light workout before)
- Between events adequate time-lapse to clear muscles of by products lactic acids and replenish glycogen.
- The day of competition many athletes limit their intake to small frequent drinks of fruit juices. To eliminate hi residue foods and fats on day of event.
How do you meet energy needs for intermediate length event?
- increase muscle glycogen to support increase anaerobic energy production.
What do you need in a high performance Diet?
- objective is the depletion of glycogen stores followed by the repletion attaining a higher tissue level.
What is the procedure for a high performance diet?
- Day 1 - 2 1/2 - diet mainly on protein and fat and carbs, vigorous training schedule exercising specific muscles to be involved in competition.
- Day 3 - dinner high in carbohydrates also a small amount of fat and protein restrict salt and hi residue.
- Day of competition - avoid baldly hi fat foods, diluted sweetened fruit juices, flavored non-carbonated drinks ( torable)

Why is water important?
Because athletes lose more athletic contests through dehydration than any other nutritional defiency
- losing as little as 2 % of water during exercise and drop your performance by 15%
- losing as little as 7 pounds of water can drop your performance by 30%
How much water can the body absorb?
1-2 pints
Athletes should make sure that they are properly hydrated before during and after practice.
What do sports drinks provide?
- more sodium, potassium, and sugar than your body needs.
- sports drinks are open to anyone
- sports drink companies don’t talk into account athlete’s needs
What do sugar and salt do?
They draw body water into the stomach and away from the parts of the body that need it.
Home made sports drink
1 cup of water.
2 tablespoons of fresh Orange juice
Pinch of salt.
How much does the body need?
1 cup of water for every 50 pounds of body weight before activity.
