What is Obesity?
-Excess body fat
- healthy risk because of increased work load on the heart and lungs
- creates a higher risk of healthy problems including:
Diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, High blood cholesterol, some cancers.
Obses kids tend to become Obsese adults
What is being overweight?
- weighing more than 10% over the standard weight
What is being underweight?
- 10% or more below the normal weight
- little body fat to serve as an energy reserve
- more difficult to fight off infections
- greater risk for iron-deficiency anemia and osteoporosis
- may be undernourished and not consume essential nutrients for normals functions
what is measuring body comp?
- A more accurate method to determine a healthy weight
How do you determine the % of body fat?
- by measuring the thickness of skin folds in three specific areas of the body with skin fold calipers.
- you can also use Hydrostatic weighing, which is most effective because water doesn’t weigh water.
Where are measurements taken on males?
- chest, abdomen, thigh
11%-18% is desirable
What are measurements taken on a female?
- triceps, thigh, hip
16-23% is desirable
How should you plan to loss weight?
- you should choose a target weight that is healthy for you
- Have a program that includes regular exercise and nutritious diet
- Losing a half pound to one pound a week is safe and realistic
- Eat low calorie foods from the 5 groups
- At meals slow and take small bites
- Avoid skipping meals and using foods at a reward
- Don’t shop for food when you are hungry
- Avoid fasting
- Avoid liquid protein diets, a high protein low carbohydrates diet
- Avoid diet pills
How should you plan a weight gain program?
- Realistic time schedule
- a diet
- a exercise program
- take second helpings
- eat more often
- increase intake fo complex carbs
What are the reasons that people cannot lose or gain a lot of weight?
- because the complex enzymatic and hormonal systems control the ability of metabolic process.
Meaning that some people’s metabolism is really slow and some are really fast.
What determines the amount of energy expended?
The size of the individual and the speed and vigor affect the amount of energy expended

The age, sex, size and degree fo fitness.
When is there a decline in the energy expenditure?
Increasing age

25-35
