Q

Reasons why energy use is slowly rising in developed countries
(people are switching to energy efficient)

A

energy prices are rising, so people are switching to energy efficient appliances such as lights and washing machines

  • people are using smart meters to monitor their usage
  • all helps to reduce energy usage

Q

Reasons why energy use is slowly rising in developed countries
(good education)

A
  • education about climate change is good so people can make the decision to use less energy and use more efficient boilers reduce energy usage
  • government policy such as insulation and more efficient boilers reduce usage in the home

Q

Reasons why energy use is rising in developing countries

Geographical location

A
  • people heat their homes when its cold or use air conditioning units when its hold which increases energy usage
  • in CHINA in 1995 there were 8 air conditioning units for every 100 households, whereas in 2009 there were 106 units for every 100 households

Q

Reasons why energy use is rising in developing countries

less education

A
  • people are less aware of how energy use impacts the environment, and the government do not have the money to improve insulation in buildings

Q

Reasons why energy use is rising in developing countries

car ownership is increasing

A
  • in INDIA in 2003, there were 600,000 new cars bought, and in 2010, 2,300,000 cars were bought
  • this increases the overall energy usage

16
Q

Wind energy potential

A

-countries that are in the central part have more potential for wind energy

17
Q

Reasons why energy use is rising in developing countries:

People heat their homes

A

when its cold people heat their homes and when its hot they use air conditioning which uses gas/electricity
-In 2009 there were 106 air conditioning units for every 100 households

18
Q

Reasons why energy use is rising in developing countries:

Have many heavy industries

A

steel= uses lots of energy and farming is becoming more mechanised and fertilisers are more widely used which results in the burning of fossil fuels

19
Q

Renewable energy:

Nuclear case study (France)

A

-France contains 59 nuclear fission reactors which generate 78% of the countries electricity

Dissposure of nuclear waste

  • underground lab at Bure= resting place for most of the highly radioactive waste
  • half a km underground
20
Q
Renewable energy:
Wind power (Denmark)
A
  • great potential in Denmark for wind power as its very flat and has a lot of wind
  • they have invested heavily in wind power and have become world leaders in manufacturing wind turbines

KEY ISSUES

  • the wind blows more consistently at night when energy needs are lowest, therefore they end up exporting it to Norway/Sweeden
  • energy cannot be stored
  • people object them because the way they look
21
Q
Renewable energy:
Coal mining (Australia)
A

australia has 9% of the worlds coal reserves
-75% of the countries electricity comes from coal fired power stations

Key issues

  • distributes biodiversity over the barrier reef
  • looking to open the worlds biggest coal mine which will damage the great barrier reef
22
Q
Renewable energy:
Tidal energy (Scotland)
A

-could produce 42% of Scotlands energy requirements

Key issues

  • great potential, but would go through entire firth, so would disrupt marine life
  • very expensive
23
Q

Renewable energy:

HAP- Belomonte Dam (Brazil)

A

3rd largest dam in the world
provides a clean fuel source that will help reduce brazil’s CO2 emissions
more efficient, as technology has improved

Key issues

  • between 12,000-20,000 people will be displaced
  • disturbing wildlife/ migrating fish
24
Q
Renewable energy:
Oil pipelines (Alaska)
A

1 million barrels of oil carrie in the Trans Alaskan pipeline per day

Key issues

  • crosses over rivers and streams, the pipe could leak into the river
  • if oil gets into sea, it will affect marine life
25
Q

Renewable energy:

Biofuel (Sierra leone)

A

Planting large area with sugar cane to produce bio-ethanol

Key issues
99% of population living here said that food production has gone down, due to international companies buying the land
less efficient than petrol
