Energy is measured in units called joules
What is energy
The ability to do work
Potential energy
Stored energy waiting to do work e.g. Spring or elastic band
Kinetic
Movement energy e.g. Car or plane
Heat energy
This is energy that causes things to move, hot air causes a hot air balloon to rise and steam causes a train to move
Light energy
Light can move things crooked radiometer or in a solar powered calculator, plants use light to make food
Sound energy
If you put your head near a loudspeaker you can feel that air is being moved by sound energy
Electrical energy
This energy can make things like extractor fans move. It is the flow of electrons around a circuit
Chemical energy
This is a type of energy stored in fuel such as coal and oil it is also stored in the food we eat and in batteries
Nuclear energy
Is the energy that is stored in the nucleus of atoms the energy that come off the sun
Law if conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed It can only change from one sort to another
Circuits
A circuit is made up of a battery some wires and different types of equipment and can be used to observe energy conversion
Renewable energy
Renewable energy is constantly being replaced by nature
Renewable energy sources
Solar energy
Hydro electric
Wind energy,
Wave energy,
Biomass energy (use plants to make fuel),
Geothermal energy,(metal under your house heats up)
Advantages of renewable energy
Renewable energy does not cause pollution
They will not run out
They are fairly safe to use
Disadvantages of renewable energy
They are expensive to develop and set up
More research needs to be done into how make them good sources of energy

Cannot be replaced and will run out

Disadvantage of fossil fuels
They cause pollution and damage to the atmosphere
The sun as a source of all our energy
Heats the ocean and the air creating wild currents. It allows plants to make food
Nuclear energy
When the nucleus of an atom is split large amounts of energy are released from it
Advantages of nuclear energy
Nuclear radiation is used to kill cancer cells
Sterilise food
Produce electricity
It will not run out like fossil fuels
