Energy Flashcards
Kinetic Energy
exists as a result of a mass moving
Potential Energy
Stored energy an object has due to its position.
Conservation Of Energy
Energy can neither be created or destroyed.
Increasing Disorder
In a closed system, the level of disorder, measured by entropy, will always increase or remain constant over time.
Entropy
A measure of the disorder of a system.
Endergonic Reaction
A reaction that requires energy to be absorbed in order for it to take place.
Exergonic Reaction
A reaction that releases free energy in the process.
Activation Energy
The energy a molecule must acquire to undergo a specific chemical reaction.
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without undergoing any permanent chemical change.
Substrate
A molecule on which an enzyme acts.
Active Site
a region on an enzyme that binds to a protein or other substance during a reaction.
Binding Site
The site on a substrate or reactant that binds to an enzyme.
Allosteric Enzyme
An enzyme that changes shape when a regulatory molecule binds to it, which alters the enzyme’s catalytic activity.
Repressor
A protein that prevents genes from being expressed by binding to DNA or RNA.
Activator
A molecule or protein that increases the activity of an enzyme or gene product.
Feedback Inhibition
A regulatory mechanism in which a biochemical pathway is regulated by the amounts of the product that the pathway produces.
ATP Structure
Sugar, Adenine, Chain of Three Phosphates
