Energy Flashcards
What is energy?
It’s the ability to do work. Measured in joules
What are the different types of energy?
Heat
Kinetic
Electricity
Light
Sound
Chemical
Nuclear
Gravitational
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
This tells us that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. Any device which changes energy from one form into another is called a transducer
What are non-renewable sources?
An energy source which will eventually run out or be exhausted e.g. fossil fuels or nuclear
What are renewable sources?
An energy which is inexhaustible or will never run out, or is replaceable e.g. solar, wind, tidal, biomass or geothermal
Why is nuclear considered a low carbon fuel when it’s non-renewable?
It doesn’t emit greenhouse gases whilst generating electricity
What are the top three renewable energy resources globally?
Hydro
Wind
Solar
What is gravitational potential energy?
This is the energy an object has because of its position in a gravitational field
What is the equation for potential energy?
PE
mg h
What is kinetic energy?
It’s the energy an object has because it’s moving
What is the equation for kinetic energy?
KE
1/2m V2
What is work?
When a force moves its point of application a certain distance, we say that work is done
What is the equation for work done
W
F D
(Change in kinetic energy will be the work done)
What is power?
It is how quickly something can do a certain amount of work
Equation for power
WD
P T
