Application of Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
It can be described as a push or a pull
What happens when a force acts?
It will try to move the object or change its shape or size
What is a force measured in?
Newtons
What is it when we have more than one force acting on an object?
It is the resultant force.
Resultant force = EF = jam of the forces
Four forces that wound act on a plane
Lift
Drag Thrust
Weight
What is the limit of proportionality?
When a spring has been stretched beyond its elastic limit and will not return to its original length.
What is Hooke’s law?
F =ke
F = force
K = spring constant
E = natural length
Hooke’s law ratio
F1/F2 = e1/e2
Four uses for compression type springs
Clickey pens
Suspension in cars and bikes
Pogo stick
Mattress
What is a moment
It is the turning effect of a force around a fixed point called a pivot
How to find the moment
M
F D
What is the principle of moments
When a body is in equilibrium the sun of the clockwise moments about any point equals the sum of the anticlockwise moments about the same point.
CWM=ACWM
What is reaction forces?
When a lever is balanced or in equilibrium the pivot must exert an upward force on the lever in order to support it.
The reaction force does not create a moment or turning effect about the pivot. Why?
There is no distance to the pivot because the reaction is on the pivot
What is the centre of mass/gravity
The centre of mass of an object is the point where it’s total mass appears to act.
