Energy Flashcards
name 3 main types of fossil fuels
coal, oil and gas
fossil fuel advantages
generate large amounts of cheap energy
provide reliable supply of energy
fossil fuel disadvantages
release greenhouse gases= cause pollution and contribute to global warming
eventually run out
fossil fuel definition
non-renewable natural resources formed from the remains of organisms
renewable energy definition
non finite/most sustainable form of energy
wind use
convert wind KE into electricity
wind advantage
no greenhouse gases produced//once set up=cheap
wind disadvantage
set up costs=high/turbines=unsightly and cause noise pollution
solar use
convert suns energy to electricity
solar advantage
no greenhouse gases produced/ once set up=cheap
solar disadvantage
no sunlight=no energy generated/ solar panels=expensive
tidal use
convert water current and tides KE into electricity
tidal advantage
guaranteed, predictable and produce no greenhouse gases
tidal disadvantage
expensive to build/ disrupt ecosystems
hydro-electric use
trapped water=released from dams and its KE turns electric turbines
