Energy Flashcards
What is energy
The body’s ability to do work
Gets the energy it needs through food by a process called metabolism
What is three functions of energy
Physical activities such as running swimming and standing
Heat generation to maintain the body at a temperature of 37 degrees
Functioning of internal organs eg heart
What is the energy value for
Protein
Carbohydrates
Fats
Protein
1g = 4 kcal
Carbohydrates
1g= 4kcal
Fat
1g = 9kcal
What is bmr
Minimum amount of energy required to maintain body functions when at rest
It is measure when a person is warm
Complete physical and mental rest
What is metabolism
Process through which the body converts the food we eat into energy
Used to maintain bodily functions such as breathing
Three factors that determine energy requirements
Size
Generally the larger the body the higher energy requirements as more energy is needed to maintain it
Health status
During times of illness convalescent require less energy due to a lack of physical exercise
Activity level
The more active a person is the more needy that it require eg a runner requires more energy than a painter
What is energy balance
All energy intake should balance energy output to maintain weight
If energy intake is greater than energy output people gain weight as exceeds energy is converted to fat
If energy output exceeds energy intake people lose weight
