energy Flashcards
why is the national grid an effective way to transfer energy
The transfer of electrical energy via the grid is very efficient. When currents in a cable are higher, more energy is dissipated to the surroundings through heating. As high currents waste more energy than low currents, electrical power is transported around the grid at a high voltage and a low current.
why do things become statically charged
Static electricity is the result of an imbalance between negative and positive charges in an object. These charges can build up on the surface of an object until they find a way to be released or discharged.
what can the rubbing of certain materials tansfer
The rubbing of certain materials against one another can transfer negative charges, or electrons.
what is a transformer
View all
A transformer is defined as a passive electrical device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through the process of electromagnetic induction.
what is a step up transformer
When a transformer steps up voltage, current is stepped down. A step up transformer at the power station steps up the voltage and consequently steps down the current. This means that the current flowing in the overhead cables is relatively small and can be distributed long distances across country.
describe the interactions between charged objects
The interaction between two like-charged objects is repulsive. The interaction between two oppositely charged objects is attractive.
what is the attraction between positively charged objects and neutral objects
any charged object will attract towards a neutral object
what is the concept for an electric field
The interaction between two like-charged objects is repulsive. The interaction between two oppositely charged objects is attractive.
