energetics Flashcards
exothermic
A reactuib that gives out energy. The surroundings increase in temperature.
Endothermic
A reaction that absorbs energy. The surroundings decrease in temperature.
Law of conservation
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
System
Transfers energy to and from its’ surroundings. The chemical particles involved in the reaction
Surroundings
Everything else in the local area
Enthalpy
Chemical energy that can be transferred as heat
Activation energy
Minimum energy required to start a reaction by breaking the initial bonds
Bond breaking
Endothermic - Energy required to break bonds
Bond-making
Exothermic - Energy is released to make bonds
What decides if a reaction is endo or exothermic
The sum of all bonds broken OR the sum of all bonds made
