Energetics 1 Flashcards
Newtons First Law
Energy can be neither created nor destroyed but It can be converted from one form to another
endothermic reaction
bond is broken, energy is taken in
exothermic reaction
bond is formed, energy is released
Enthalpy
a measure of the heat content of a substance at constant pressure.
enthalpy change of formation
The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is formed from its elements in their standard state.
enthalpy change of 1st ionisation
The enthalpy change when one mole of electrons is removed from 1 mole of gaseous atom.
enthalpy change of neutralisation
The enthalpy change when one mole of water is formed by the neutralisation of a solution of an acid by excess base under standard conditions (1atm pressure, 298K)
enthalpy change of atomisation
the enthalpy change when one mole of its atoms in the gaseous state is formed from the element in its standard state
enthalpy change of combustion
The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance in its standard state is completely burnt in excess oxygen
enthalpy change of 1st electron affinity
The enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous atoms each acquire an electron to form 1 mole of gaseous 1- ions.
enthalpy change of reaction
the enthalpy change which occurs when equation quantities of materials react under standard conditions, and with everything in its standard state.
Q= (Q=heat energy- kj)
m x c x deltaT (m=mass-kg, c=specific heat capacity, Delta T= change in temperature-K)
specific heat capacity of water and units
