Endocrineee Flashcards
Pineal gland
Produces melatonin, which regulates sleep-wake cycles.
Influenced by light exposure (less light → more melatonin → sleepiness).
Hypothalamus
small region
Function:
Controls the endocrine system by signaling the pituitary gland.
Regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep, and emotions.
Maintains homeostasis (body balance).
a bridge between es and ns
piturary gland (master gland)
Releases hormones that regulate growth, metabolism, stress, and reproduction.
Controlled by the hypothalamus. (creates growth hormone)
Homeostasis
the ability of the body to maintain a stable internal state despite environmental change
enzymes work the best when conditions stay balanced, and they are important because they speed up chemical reactions
Insulin
helping cells absorb glucose for energy. It also stores extra glucose in the liver for later use.
GLUCOSE
is the main energy source for the body, comes from food and extra glucose is stored in the liver
Adrenaline
Produced by adrenal glands
Prepares body for “fight or flight”
Increases heart rate and breathing
Boosts energy by releasing stored glucose
Heightens alertness and reaction speed
Patrathyroid glands
4 tiny glands, they regulate calcium levels in the blood and controls bone development
thyroid
butterfly shaped gland, releases hormone thyroxine abd helps brain development
thymus
produces white blood cells trains/matures tem to help fight infections, ITS behind the lungs
adrenal
releases adrenaline that increases heart rate, boosts energy by releasing stored/saved up glucose
pancreas
releases insulin and gluagon. worktogtehr to regulate glucose in blood
kidneys
PEE filder blood and removes waste, which is excreted as unrine AND REGULATE PEEEEE
COMPARE ns and es
effects of es is slower than the ns and they work togterh to maintain homeostasis
Negative feedback
helps maintain stabiloity in the body by fetecting changes and triggering responses to restore normal conditions
stimulus-> receptor-> control centre-> feedback
Postive feedback
instead of reversing the change, postiive feedback amplifies it instead, eg blood clotting, and it does not continue forever it only depends on the situation
