Endocrine- thyroid and parathyroid Flashcards
1
Q
the thyroid gland consists of closely packed spherical follicles lined by a single layer of cuboidal epithelial cells and filled with _____.
A
“colloid”
2
Q
Follicle epithelial cell functions (3)
A
- Collect and transport iodine to the colloid
- Synthesize thyroglobulin and secrete
into colloid - Release thyroid hormones from thyroglobulin and secrete them into the circulation
3
Q
what cells secrete calcitonin?
A
Parafollicular C cells
4
Q
what cells secrete calcitonin?
A
Parafollicular C cells
5
Q
Follicular Cell Function
A
- Synthesize thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase, secrete these into the thyroid follicles together with iodine
- Thyroid peroxidase reduces iodine (makes it reactive), allowing it to integrate onto tyrosine residues of thyroglobulin
- Follicular cells take up iodinated thyroglobulin from the follicles by endocytosis, extract thyroid hormones by protease action, and release thyroid hormones to the blood
6
Q
_____ function is to produce substrates in which T3 and T4 are going to be generated.
A
follicular cell
